Clark County Census Historical Population

On July 1, 1909, Lincoln County was split into two separate counties using the Third Standard Parallel as the division point creating Clark County. Las Vegas was named the County Seat.

YEAR . . POPULATION

CENSUS

1900 ..... 1,075 Although Clark County was not created until 1909, data is available for Lincoln County by precinct. These precincts which are now in Clark County were used to produce these figures. At that time, Bunkerville was the largest community in what is now Clark County.
1910 ..... 3,371 The population of the County increased 209% during the previous 10 years. Most of this increase was in the Las Vegas Valley and the South County areas of Goodsprings and Sandy Valley.
1920 ..... 4,859 Although the 1920 census revealed the lowest increase of any decade in this century for Clark County, it should be noted that the State of Nevada actually declined in population. There was also a marked decline in the population of the South County, as mining slowed following the end of World War I. As with the 1910 census, all of the population in Laughlin was within the Fort Mojave Indian Reservation boundary.
1930 ..... 8,532 During the 1920's the population of Las Vegas more than doubled, as did the population for the rest of the Las Vegas Valley urban area. By 1930, populations in the areas that are now North Las Vegas and Enterprise had grown, but data for them is unavailable.
1940 .... 16,414 The 1940 census reflects the establishment of Boulder City during the construction of Hoover Dam. Data suggests that the population grew in all areas of the County. This includes part of the Las Vegas Valley outside the city limits. Data for those areas was not available.
1950 .... 48,589 During the 1940's the population of the County nearly tripled. Most of that increase was due to the construction of the BMI complex and Nellis Air Force Base. Henderson was quickly established to house workers near the magnesium plant. There were also over 800 workers living in the Laughlin area for the construction of Davis Dam.
1960 ... 127,016 Phenomenal growth continued during the 1950's for all communities in the Las Vegas Valley Urban Area, but data was still not available for unincorporated areas such as Paradise and Sunrise Manor. The federal government began testing nuclear weapons in the neighboring Nye County, bringing workers into both counties.
1970 ... 273,288 The 1970 census was the first since 1910 to provide for more detailed information about unincorporated areas in the Las Vegas Valley. Spring Valley was sparsely developed. It was also the first census since 1910 to reveal that all areas of the County had grown during the previous decade. In fact, this growing trend has continued since that time. Throughout the County the growth of rural areas, especially near urban centers, is a national trend influenced by better highways, which have reduced commuting times to work in urban centers from outlying areas.
1980..... 463,087 During the 1970's Spring Valley and Paradise became more developed, as did other areas. The populations of Boulder City, Enterprise, Whitney, and the Northeast, Northwest, and the South County areas all grew by substantial proportions.
1990..... 768,203 Growth in the 1980's continued at a rapid pace, especially in the areas mentioned above (1980 census). Additionally, Laughlin and Henderson (including Green Valley) experienced rapid development.
2000....1,428,690 During the 1990's the master planned community of Summerlin was recognized as the fastest growing community in the United States.   Accelerated  growth in the southern portion of the valley came with the development of various master planned communities such as Seven Hills, Anthem, Southern Highlands, Rhodes Ranch and Silverado Ranch.

Notes:

Mesquite and Las Vegas were unincorporated, but they were distinct communities and census data is available for both. (Mesquite was founded in 1894 and incorporated in 1984, while Las Vegas was incorporated in 1911.)

Whitney - Although this unincorporated town was originally known as Whitney, it was known as East Las Vegas for many years. It should not be confused with Whitney Ranch, a nearby development within the City of Henderson.

Other Las Vegas Valley - This includes Nellis Air Force Base and County "islands," parcels of land surrounded by a particular city but not annexed by it.

For 1920, 1930 and 1940, the data includes all unincorporated areas in the Las Vegas Valley, as well as North Las Vegas and the Northwest County.

For 1950 and 1960, the data includes all unincorporated areas in the Las Vegas Valley that are currently unincorporated, as well as the Northwest County.

Northwest County - For most of the years the census was taken, data for the Northwest County was combined with data for the Las Vegas Valley Urban Area in figures for the Las Vegas Township.
