What is RACES?

RACES is an acronym for - Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Services. Established in 1952 by Federal Communications Commission, part 97, subpart E, paragraph 97.407. RACES provides for Amateur Radio operation for emergency purposes only, during periods of declared emergencies, authorized by emergency management officials, to support government agencies. RACES is made up of volunteer licensed amateur radio operators and is headed by a RACES radio officer who is a volunteer appointed by Emergency Management. Administered by a local, county, or state civil defense agency, typically Emergency Management.

What is ARES?

ARES is an acronym for - Amateur Radio Emergency Service. ARES is sponsored by ARRL - The National Association for Amateur Radio. ARES consists of licensed Amateur Radio operators who have voluntarily registered their qualifications and equipment for communications duty when disaster strikes. They provide for Amateur Radio operation in support of both emergencies and public service events. There are 4 levels of organization:
  1. National
  2. Section
  3. District
  4. Local - the local level is headed by the Emergency Coordinator, a volunteer appointed by the elected ARRL Section Manager.

All Clark County Nevada ARES members are enrolled in Clark County Nevada RACES and thus are able to provide communication support in both declared and undeclared emergencies and to governmental and public service agencies as requested.
