RACES is an acronym for - Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Services. Established in 1952 by Federal Communications Commission, part 97, subpart E, paragraph 97.407. RACES provides for Amateur Radio operation for emergency purposes only, during periods of declared emergencies, authorized by emergency management officials, to support government agencies. RACES is made up of volunteer licensed amateur radio operators and is headed by a RACES radio officer who is a volunteer appointed by Emergency Management. Administered by a local, county, or state civil defense agency, typically Emergency Management.
