1. Are original documents available to view online?

   No. Original documents are not available to view on our web site, only a summary of recorded documents. You must come into the office to view original recorded documents in the Records Research public viewing area.

2. How often are the records updated?

   Our official records provide limited document information. As the deputy recorder accepts payment for the transaction in our office, all record indexes will be available for viewing and/or searching once the document has been indexed.

   This process takes approximately 3 - 4 weeks, depending on the current workload.

   Our marriage records are updated instantly.

3. When is the best time to record a document?

   Office hours are 8 AM - 5PM, Monday through Friday.

   The best time to record is early in the morning: before 10 AM and generally between noon and 2 PM.

   The busiest times are usually after 3 PM.

   Wait times are generally the shortest between noon and 2 PM; they are generally the longest after 3 PM.

   Please note that Fridays and the day before a holiday are extremely busy as well as the last day of the month. To expedite the recording process, please review Recording Requirements before coming in.

5. How do I get a copy of my marriage license and/or certificate?

   There is a difference between the Marriage License, Marriage Certificate and Marriage Abstract. If you are ordering a copy as legal proof of marriage, you will need either a Marriage Certificate or Marriage Abstract. Different agencies required different documents.

   If you do not know which type of document you need, ordering both Abstract and Certificate is the quickest option. Or you can contact the requesting agency, asking them which type of document (Certificate or Abstract) they require.

   Marriage License

   The marriage license (application) is the document you filled out in the Clark County Clerk’s Office, Marriage Bureau. It contains information about the bride and groom (i.e. date and place of birth, parents names, etc.).

   Marriage Certificate

   The marriage certificate is the document that is completed by the licensed official who performs the ceremony. By law, the marriage official has up to 10 days to bring the certificate to the Recorder's Office for recording. The certificate shows the date of your marriage, the place where the marriage was performed, the name of the witness to the marriage, the name of the marriage official who performed the wedding ceremony, and other information.

   The marriage abstract is a certified document that is used for most U.S. agencies and some foreign countries.

10. What is the purpose of "recording" documents?

    People have felt the need to produce a record of their transactions and dealings with one another since the beginning of human commerce. Some of the earliest known writings have been found to be inventories, tax records and records of exchanges of goods.

    Modern societies have found established archives valuable for tracing and proving the legal ownership of land and other property and as a means of establishing rights and claims to minerals, and structures.

    The purpose of "recording" a document is to preserve it in an "archive" that is accessible when questions of precedence or ownership arise. The Archive, by providing equal access to all for both preserving and researching documents acts as an unbiased arbitrator for the public good.

    An actively updated central repository for a county allows persons to both notify and be notified of actions that may affect them and their real property without searching potentially endless databases for hundreds of companies.

11. What is "Indexing"?

    (NRS 247.150/160/170 has the official definition).

    Indexing provides a reliable means of locating a document that has been recorded in a variety of ways. The index contains names of the principal parties to every document, the date when the document or instrument was recorded in the recorder’s office and the book and instrument where the document is recorded.

    Indexing "provides constructive notice, without delay." Individuals searching for documents that affect their lives or livelihood have instant access once indexing is completed.

12. How does the (Recorder’s) web site affect me?

    The Recorder’s web site is intended to give you up to the minute information on changes in recording requirements and other useful information. The web site provides instant access to recording indexes without having to come to the Recorder’s office in person.

    All recorded documents become public record.

13. Why does recording take longer than it used to?

    Demand has increased while the resources available to meet that demand have not increased.

    There are also many instances where large numbers of documents presented for recording do not meet the standards for recording. Sorting through documents takes additional time away from the recording process.

    There are some things that our customers can do to speed the process for everyone:

    Take the time to prepare your documents. Have them all ready to record when you arrive at the recording counter, and error-free as possible. Have an accurate count of your documents before a number is issued to you.

    "Holds" tie up a recording deputy from completing other work. When a company presents 75 documents for recording and only five are ready to record, it delays the process for everyone.

14. Will the Recorder's Office assist me in filling out my documents or forms?

    No. The Recorder's Office employees are not authorized to practice law and are forbidden by state statute to offer legal advice. If you need assistance in filling out your forms, please consult with your attorney.

15. If I come to the Recorder's Office before 5:00 PM, am I guaranteed that my documents will be recorded?

    No. Recording stops at 5:00 PM.

    We need to stop recording at 5:00 PM to close out the recording day in an efficient and timely manner. The results of after hour experiments led us to the conclusion that stable, regular hours were better in the long run. 

16. Does the title company have complete control over when my documents get recorded?

    Yes. Title companies have control over when the documents are presented for recording.

17. I receive the following error message: The requested URL could not be retrieved.

    Are you behind a firewall at your location?

    Many firewalls are set to not let access to strange port numbers such as ours (8498). Try accessing the file from a different physical location, such as home and work.
