Who Can Be a Poll Worker

Qualifications to Apply:  All poll workers (also known as Election Board Officers) who work at an election day or early voting polling place must meet the requirements below.

Legal Requirements:

Bullet

Be a registered voter

Bullet

Not be a candidate for nomination or election

Bullet

Not be a relative of a candidate for nomination or election

Election Department Requirements:

Bullet

Successfully complete the Election Department’s training

Bullet

Be able to perform ALL duties, including learning, understanding and following procedures and instructions

Bullet

Have a professional demeanor, e.g., consistently demonstrate good judgment, communication and people skills

Bullet

Work well as a team member

Bullet

Have access to reliable transportation

Bullet

Election day workers must be able to endure the long hours of election day (about 14 hours)

Bullet

Early voting workers must be able to endure working long hours for extended periods of time (up to two weeks straight), adapt to a variable work schedule and perform a variety of tasks and assignments


What Poll Workers Do, When and Where

Paid Volunteers:  Poll workers serve on election day and/or during the 14 days of early voting.  They are not full-time, permanent employees.  They are essentially paid volunteers.  Poll workers must meet all of the qualifications listed above as well as the training requirements listed below.  They may work as Clerks at precinct tables, Voting Machine Operators or Polling Place Assistants.

Compensation:  Election day poll workers receive $120 for the day.  Early voting poll workers are paid by the hour.  Training is not compensated.
